Police say a 32-year-old Puna man on probation for felony domestic abuse threatened his ex-wife with a spear gun and machete Monday evening before breaking into her home and punching her to her face and neck.
According to court documents filed by police, Zodice K. Madeyski Jr. texted his ex-wife at about 9 a.m. Monday asking her to pick him up in her car — and she did so, despite an active court order for protection from Madeyski she was granted.
Documents state they ran errands and he returned with her to her Ainaloa home at about 4 p.m. At about 6 p.m., he began drinking alcohol in her garage and “became belligerent,” according to documents, while the woman was in the house with her three young children.
Madeyski then began banging on the locked glass sliding door between the garage and the house, and the woman told the children to lock themselves in their room, documents state — at which point Madeyski grabbed a spear gun and machete and brandished them before punching the glass door four times, causing it to shatter.
According to documents, the woman retreated to her bedroom and closed and locked the door behind her. Madeyski, who had entered the house, allegedly broke down the door and punched his ex-wife to her neck, her upper lip and her nose, causing redness and swelling.
Madeyski also allegedly told the woman he was going to kill her and her children.
It’s unclear who called police, but they arrived at that point and arrested Madeyski.
He was charged with second-degree assault, felony domestic abuse, terroristic threatening, third-degree property damage and violating a protective order.
Three of those charges are Class C felonies punishable by up to five years imprisonment, upon conviction.
During Madeyski’s initial court appearance Wednesday, Hilo District Judge Kanani Laubach denied a motion by Deputy Public Defender Zachary Wingert to free Madeyski on court-supervised release without cash bail. She ordered Madeyski, who remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $30,010 bail, to appear at 2:30 p.m. today for a preliminary hearing.
Prosecutors also filed a motion to revoke Madeyski’s probation on the felony abuse conviction.
